A translation of Herodotus’ Histories 1.74
Asia Minor, 591 B.C.
King Cyaxares of the Medes1 is hunting the Scythians2 who murdered his son. They have fled into the neighboring kingdom, Lydia,3 ruled by King Alyattes.
Alyattes refused to hand over the Scythians to an insistent Cyaxares. So, a war broke out between the Lydians and the Medes which lasted five years. The Medes often beat the Lydians, and the Lydians often beat the Medes. They even fought a battle at night:
Until the sixth year of the war, the two sides were evenly matched. Then, in the midst of a battle, day suddenly became night as they clashed.
Thales the Milesian had forewarned the Ionians4 about this transformation. Actually, he had foretold the exact year in which it would occur.5
As for the Lydians and the Medes, as soon as they saw night usurp day they stopped the battle and rushed to make peace. Their mediators were Syennesis the Cilician and Labynetos the Babylonian.
They rushed to have them swear an oath, and also arranged a marriage alliance — giving the hand of Aryenis, Alyattes’ daughter, to Astyages, Cyaxares’ son — since even firm agreements don't tend to last without a firm reason.
The Medes and Lydians swear oaths just like the Greeks, except that after they cut the veins in their arms, they also lick each other's blood.
An ancient Iranian people

A wealthy kingdom in Asia Minor
Greeks who live in Asia Minor
A prediction which Isaac Asimov called “the birth of science”. The eclipse in Asia Minor on May 28th, 585 B.C., is the earliest event in human history for which we have an exact date.
